Depicted are the Saints Florus and Laurus, the special protectors of the horses, and the Saints Wlassij and Modestus. In the lower part the three cappadocian horsemen Pevsip, Elasipp and Messip with horses at the watering place.

Generally speaking the three persons of the Trinity are not distinguished by inscriptions, however some understood them thusly: Christ at center, above whom is a tree, signifying the wood of the cross, God the Father at left, before a building symbolizing the Church, and the Holy Spirit on the right, below a hill signifying spiritual ascent.

The Tax-collector Levi, son of Alphaeus from Kapharnaum, was called by the Lord to follow him. When he became his apostle Christ, gave him the surname Matthew. (Mattai, ‚gift of God,‘ in Aramaic). The first Gospel, the church’s favorite, is Matthew’s memorial: the rest of his apostolic work is lost in the mists of contradiction. That he preached the gospel to the Jews in Palestine for perhaps fifteen years after the crucifixion is fairly sure. It is commonly but not unanimously affirmed that he died a martyr’s death. He is the Patron of the city of Salerno  and specially adored by tax-and custom people and accountants.
